Indian sandstone has become the go-to patio material for discerning Blackpool and Fylde Coast homeowners who want the authentic warmth and character of natural stone without the cost of premium UK-quarried alternatives. Imported from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, Indian sandstone slabs are available in a remarkable range of colours — from the cool blue-grey of Kandla Grey to the warm terracotta-flecked Autumn Brown — and each slab carries unique natural markings that ensure no two patios look exactly alike.
For Blackpool and Fylde Coast properties, the coastal climate presents specific considerations for patio materials. Indian sandstone — particularly the harder varieties like Kandla Grey and Raj Green — handles salt air and freeze-thaw cycles well when correctly installed and sealed. Correct installation for coastal conditions means SBR-primed slabs bedded on a full semi-dry mortar bed (not spot-bedded), ensuring the underside of each slab is fully supported and cannot flex under load or become saturated.
The versatility of Indian sandstone makes it suitable for virtually every outdoor application — main patio areas, pathways, steps, raised planters and garden walls. Mixed colour sandstone (Autumn Brown Multi) works particularly well for informal cottage gardens in rural Kirkham and Hambleton properties, while the clean, consistent tones of Kandla Grey suit the more formal, contemporary outdoor rooms increasingly popular in Lytham St Annes and Poulton-le-Fylde.
Alongside Indian sandstone, we install porcelain patios and natural stone patios (slate & Yorkstone) — particularly popular in Lytham St Annes and Poulton-le-Fylde.

Sealing & Long-Term Care of Indian Sandstone
Indian sandstone is a porous material that benefits significantly from quality sealing after installation. We recommend allowing 4–6 weeks for the mortar bed to fully cure before applying a penetrating impregnator sealer — this allows any residual construction moisture to escape before the pores are sealed. A quality penetrating sealer does not create a surface film (which can peel or trap moisture) but instead fills the capillary pores within the stone, making it significantly more resistant to staining, algae growth and water ingress.
Annual or biennial resealing is recommended for Indian sandstone patios on the Fylde Coast, where the combination of salt air, coastal rainfall and temperature variation creates a challenging environment for outdoor stone. Between resealing, routine cleaning with a pH-neutral stone cleaner and occasional use of an algae remover will keep your patio looking freshly installed for years. Pressure washing is effective but should be used sparingly and at low pressure to avoid abrading the surface or disturbing the pointing mortar.
Pointing is often the first element to require attention on an older Indian sandstone patio. Traditional sand and cement pointing can crack and crumble within 5–10 years, particularly in exposed coastal positions. We now use flexible, polymer-modified pointing mortars as standard on all Indian sandstone installations — these accommodate slight movement in the slab bed without cracking, maintaining the clean lines between slabs and preventing weed ingress for far longer than traditional pointing.
We also complete full driveway and patio packages — pairing Indian sandstone with a block paving driveway or resin driveway. Serving Thornton-Cleveleys, Kirkham, and Hambleton. Book your free sandstone patio survey.
